The Society Has Been Financially Assisted By Oxford City Council

Meetings Are Held

in the

 United Reform Church

(Opposite The Police Station)

June 15th "Oxfordshire Sinners and Villains " - a Talk by Carl Boardman

At the present timeĀ  there is little in the way of research amongst the members.

Some work is still proceeding on the books referred to on the PUBLICATIONS page and there are two projects connected with The Poor Law in the area.

The Oxford United Parishes'  Industrial School

(Also known as the "Cowley Industrial School" and later "The Poplars").

Trevor Williams has been researching the history of the Industrial School founded by the Guardians of the Oxford City Union in the 1850's and has names of children who were resident in the institution.

He has a number of recorded  interviews with past inmates recounting their recollections of the regime.

Anyone interested in the lists for their own projects are welcome to contact him at Trevor.Williams@tesco.net or the address and telephone number on the Local history page.

Trevor is also researching the story of the Reverend George Moore.

The Headington Poor Law Union 1841 - 1873

Morton Hill has been looking at the Minute Books for the Union of Headington with covered 24 mainly rural parishes.

The books are complete for the whole of this period but the first few years of the Union, from 1835 to August 1841 are missing.

The information collated includes lists of claimants for relief because of sickness with the condition noted for several years.  Also workhouse admittance orders issued.

Total amounts paid for out-relief have also been analysed and costs for provisions to the workhouse as well as names of suppliers recorded.
