Mini Production

The Society Has Been Financially Assisted By Oxford City Council

(Opposite The Police Station)

The factory where generations of Morris cars from the Bullnose through to the Mini has now disappeared. The sole surviving element is the old military college building which was the first Morris factory in Cowley.

The mini was assembled in E Block  in the South Works for several years. Production for much of the time was on two shifts, Day & Night, and both Morris and Austin versions were produced under the British Motor Corporation regime.

The engines were brought into the works from Birmingham and fitted into the front chassis on one line.

Sub-frames and engines were sent over from the engine line and set up on the main line ready for the body shell to be added.

The body shell was brought over from the feeder line where windscreens, door, quarter and back lights (windows) had been fitted along with wiring harsnesses, lights and other components.

The shell was lowered onto the sub-frames with great care.

Once in place the job of fastening it to the frames and connecting shock absorbers so that it could progress down the line to have all the other elements which would turn it into a car  capable of being driven off at the end was begun.

Front shock absorbers and sub-frame bolts were fitted.

Rear cage-nuts had to be tapped to ensure that bolts fastened in securely.

Finally the bolts were screwed home to make everything ready for petrol tank and wheels to be fitted.

Now it was starting look more like a car although there were several more stages on the line before the final drive off.
